It's a shame that so many Spanish speaking kids are under standard.

Although I will admit to know very little about educational principles, I have always felt that it would be better to change the way the Spanish speaking kids are immersed into English speaking classes. I would think that it would be better for everyone's education if they were taught the basics in their native language and taught English as an additional, mandatory course. WHen they were fluent, they could enter the classes with English speaking students. I would think that this system would not compromise the education of either English and Spanish speaking students while it worked to join them in classes taught in English.

It seems that our current system of bilingual ed tends to curtail the progress of both groups.

One of my older sons was in a bilingual class in grade school. At first I thought it would be neat for him to learn Spanish but I quickly learned that he would not be encouraged to learn Spanish. The purpose of the class was for the English students to help the Spanish speakers to learn English. I transferred him into a different school after a few months.
