They are extremely religious-and not like the Ba'Athists at all (imo) except that they, like most soldiers/militants/terrorists/liberators in the region are willing to be as brutal as they need to be. I doubt they would be working "for" Saddam. They would be working for a religious state, not for a secular state led by a bad Muslim like Saddam.

soldiers/militants/terrorists/liberators - I have put all these terms in, because what you call the folks fighting in the ME often (but not always, of course) is determined by your beliefs, and not really by what they are actually doing (imo).
