Britain Rebuffs Sharon on Severing Ties with Arafat

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain rebuffed visiting Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's appeal on Monday to cut ties with Yasser Arafat, whom Israel has accused of undermining reformist Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who hosted Sharon for a private dinner, let Foreign Secretary Jack Straw deliver the rejection of what a senior Israeli official said was a message that "any contact with Arafat" weakens Abbas.

"The foreign secretary made it clear that the British position, which is also that of the European Union, is that we would continue to have dealings with Arafat," a British official said after Straw met Sharon earlier in the day.
