I would just point out that when one judges peoples actions they need to consider the times THEN not NOW. I was too young (10 yrs old) to make much of McCarthy other then I do remember we were in a very HOT cold war with Communism. One of my brothers was in Korea fighting off the RED HORDE. People were very concerned about the spread of Communism worldwide and particularly in this country. Labor unions were a big concern (I think the Mafia fought them off there (gg)) as was the actors union. Do I think McCarthyism got out of control--YES I do. Do I understand why it started--Yes, I do. Now, as to Nixon, I was very familiar by then with what was going on. I had served my stint in the Service and had enlisted in the reserves for some more money while going to college. We were CONSTANTLY on alert because of subversive activities. It was a time on National unrest and disruption much of it attributed to the Vietnam war but to be honest, I think it would have happened anyhow due to increasing action on the Civil Rights front giving trouble makers an opportunity to take advantage of the unrest. Nixon was BY FAR a shooin to win the election so I seriously doubt the Watergate affair had ANYTHING to do with his wanting to make sure he got reelected, I think it was more likely something far deeper then has ever yet come to light. jdn
