I would just point out that when one judges peoples actions they need to consider the times THEN not NOW. I was too young (10 yrs old) to make much of McCarthy other then I do remember we were in a very HOT cold war with Communism.

Frankly, I don't care if Stalin was on a ship outside NYC harbor. Mr. McCarthy ruined the professional lives of many Americans who were not guilty of subversive behavior against their gov't. And his methods were incidious.

For an example, his submittal of press releases was very effective in screwing over his victim. Apparently, back then, there were only a few press release deadlines during the course of a day. The last one for the day was for the first papers coming out the next AM.

Mr. McCarthy's staff would submit releases just minutes before the final deadline. That meant the victim would not be able to rebut til the next day. By the time, a rebuttal was submitted, the person was ruined.

Republicans used McCarthy and his tactics to discredit potential opponents. The religious right used him to attack Hollywood. It was only when McCarthy got out of hand did they silence him.

There is no excuse for the way McCarthy operated. Was he persecuted in the end? Most likely......but that does mean that Coulter can excuse his behavior. Frankly, I think Ms. Coulter is simply trying to sell books.
