According to the educational research, the children who do best are the ones whose native language is supported WHILE they learn a new language. Where the L1, native language, is cut off, the children do the worst. Guess which system we have?

For the very best results you must teach the child academic skills in the L1, and instruct using total physical response, in the L2. This is because CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency )takes about 7 years to establish- CALP is the ability to be taught, at grade level, in academic subjects. BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills) on the other hand, can be picked up in a year- and frequently is mistaken for CALP by the ignorant.
