I think that anyone who states that a block trade is a "sell" or a "buy" does not understand the market and the way it works. A transaction has two sides, every single time. The large piece had a buyer and seller. That it was at the bid price might lend support to the fact that the stock was weak, that the buyer took the piece at a the low end of the inside market. As well, the seller's firm could have been selling the stock all day and the large piece was the seller's firm covering the short position (they were selling for the customer), moving stock from the customer's account to the firm account.

As head trader for a regional brokerage firm, I just wanted to clarify this issue. As well I host a SI thread, From the Trading Desk that discuss market operations, market making and trading stocks.
