Looks like XtremeSpectrum/Motorola HDR WPAN proposal is toast - unless they can somehow overcome this coalition. Seems unlikely at this point, as downselection happens next week... MultiBand OFDM Alliance - Our Mission
In support of developing the best technical solution for the emerging Ultra Wideband (IEEE 802.15.3a) PHY specification for a diverse set of applications, a new alliance has been created. This new entity is called the MultiBand OFDM Alliance (MBOA) and was formed in June 2003 by the MultiBand Coalition, Texas Instruments, Samsung Electronics, Panasonic, Hewlett Packard and many additional companies. These companies support a proposal that is based on an OFDM approach, originally introduced by Texas Instruments in March 2003, which will enable the broadest possible range of applications and satisfy the requirements of consumers. The MBOA has been working closely to use its collective expertise in the creation of a new Multiband OFDM proposal that will be presented to the IEEE in July 2003.
The MBOA includes some of the most influential players in the Consumer Electronics, Personal Computing, Home Entertainment, Semiconductor and Digital Imaging spaces, including: Femto Devices, Focus Enhancements, Fujitsu, General Atomics, Hewlett Packard, Infineon, Institute for Infocomm Research, Intel, Mitsubishi, NEC, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Staccato Communications, Taiyo Yuden, TDK, Texas Instruments Incorporated, Time Domain, and Wisair. Collectively, these companies retain much of the world's expertise and experience in designing and building systems and silicon based upon UWB techniques. These companies have designed and built UWB systems of various types over the past 10 years, including a variety of single-band and multi-band approaches. The companies in MBOA are united in their desire to arrive at the best technical solution for UWB and to enable a dynamic market for UWB products. These companies have created this new group with a consensus that the best technique to achieve this is Multiband OFDM.
