U.S. CPI up 0.2% in June, core rate unchanged
by Corbett Daly
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - Consumer prices rose 0.2 percent in June, while the core rate, which excludes the volatile food and energy costs remained unchanged, the Labor Department said. Both were largely in line with expectations. Wall Street economists had expected the overall consumer price index to rise 0.2 percent and the core rate to rise a slightly stronger 0.1 percent. On a year-on-year basis, the CPI was up 2.1 percent, while the core rate was up 1.5 percent. For the first six months of 2003, U.S. consumer prices have risen at a 2.2 percent seasonally adjusted annual rate. The core U.S. inflation rate is running at a 0.9 percent rate for the year.
