Without any question the global economy is headed toward ever greater energy efficiency. Appliances, devices, house heating, vehicle propulsion, manufacturing, agriculture etc. are all using less and less energy AND less resources (except intellectual ones). IMHO Klaus Toepfer is mistaken. Because of this progress the standard of living of the average Homo sapiens CAN increase sharply. Even with the technological progress we may not have quite the resources to give a decent standard of living to six billion that we have now but who says that number cannot decrease? We have to make sure that it does decrease by providing birth control devices to poor countries. Bush's anti-contraception campaign not withstanding, the women of the world will surely gain control over their pregnancies.
