I am having some trouble with the word "benefits" as it is positioned in this discussion. I under stand that opportunity should not be restricted on a prejudicial basis. An equal opportunity to participate with the goal of benefitting seems reasonable. For this reason, I would support a provision that legitimates a civil union and provides an equal (equal with married persons) opportunity to participate and thus benefit. Heterosexuals who no longer want to support "marriage" can simply opt for the "civil union" and leave people who value "marriage" alone.

The terminology that is suggesting we "throw out marriage" confirms the suspicions that have been expressed by people who have fought to protect the institution of marriage. There has been deceitful and not very well hidden motives that are focused on destructive agendas regarding traditional family values.

If you don't want to participate in a "marriage," don't. If by not participating in a marriage you feel you are being denied basic opportunity then repair the gap by supporting a civil union as an alternative. If you want to participate in the type of marriage that other people have but want to change the meaning of what that is so that it essentially results in a "throwing out", then you are simply being distructive of what other people want or have.
