Have you really considered what this would mean? For children, for example; for legal protections of people choosing to live together

I've considered it enough to believe that it warrants serious study. I've done a lot of reinvention in my time. We have systems in place and we continue with them because they are there. If you stop and think about what purpose they serve and whether that matches your objectives or whether there's a better way of reaching your objectives, what is in place is often second best if not downright nonconstructive.

What is the purpose of marriage? What are we trying to protect. Seems to me that we're primarily trying to protect the kids. I've argued before that the contract should be between the parents and the kids, whatever the marital status of the parents. A marriage contract is an indirect and not all that effective way of protecting kids. I'd prefer the direct approach.

Or maybe you really do believe that family law lawyers need a huge boost in their incomes

I don't mind if you make a few bucks. <g> But I imagine over time that business would settle down. Most people would do just fine with standard contracts you could buy at Staples. Or the gas station, for all that matters. The people who need something more are the same folks who see their lawyers for pre-nups now. And don't forget about the 100 percent drop in divorce business.
