Marcos,

There were more than 13 colonies. Little known to most Americans were battles fought in Nova Scotia and Upper Canada.

However here the British won - and so they did not gain independence by force and had to wait for confederation.

As an aside the British and future Canadian colonists were not saints. The Univeristy I attended was founded using Privateering money from the pillaging of Bath Maine and several American ships. This privateering continued through the early 1800's was a contributing factor to the War of 1812.

As much as Canadians like to think they won that war (when they weren't even a country) the strategic issue of American independence was resolved.
