You were always far more free as a british subject than as a subject of those thirteen colonies after the thugs got control of them ... unless you had lots of money, and were white, and in favour with the regime du jour down there, of course ..... this became quite striking after the brits made illegal the slave trade, then more so on the abolition of slavery within the empire in 1833, then far more vivid in the first years of Victoria, with the Reform Acts et al coming along ... meantime you had US slavers taking Tejas, then half of all México, and trying for Cuba for ninety years, until they finally got it and slapped it with la enmienda Platt .... it was the nineteen sixties before there started to come rights in the US for non-whites
