I am not sure that I understand it completely. I definitely do not agree with some of the explanations I have heard previously.

On a simplistic level it implies that some sort of santi claus type being, who looks like my grandpa, is sitting on a cloud someplace getting disgusted or pleased by my behavior, but likes me because I am a chip off the old block.

On a deeper level it seems to imply that human beings are created with character or conscience that can be associated with the characteristics of God.

The view point that our tendencies for good and evil come from God could be dismissively explained as, "everything comes from God." It could also be discussed in terms of free will, at which point we might argue about the purpose of free will.

The "His image" thing is a little too subject to interpretation for me to make much of it. My observation has been that individuals who reference this scripture get a little too emboldened for my comfort in their dealings with others.
