<I could never understand this charge of 'moral relativism'>
America's social pendulum swings back and forth. At one pole are the Puritans, the Victorians. God, King, and Country. The Good Book contains The Truth, and our government is it's manifestation on earth. They profess to be the champions of Absolute UnRelative Morality. At the other pole are the Individualists, a heterogenous collection of queer folk, like the transvestite Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (did you catch their parade in San Francisco?).
The popularity of Moral Absolutism, is a sensitive indicator, of where America is, on that pendulum. The charge of "moral relativity" is an epithet hurled at the Individualists by Victorians. Which I pick up and hurl right back at them, pointing out how they never apply their own rules to themselves. Endless examples:
1. Bill Blackjack Bennett
2. the different reaction to Clinton's and Bush's lies
3. the support for terrorists we own
4. the incompatibility between Empire and freedom
5. the support for elections, but only if we win them
6. ProLifers, marching under the banner of "all life is sacred", who support every American war, and the death penalty, and murdering doctors who perform abortions. |
