I agree. I don't like it either. I'm not as private as you are, but I still don't like it. Problem is, cookies can also serve useful purposes, even necessary purposes. Cookies don't kill people; people kill people, or something like that.

I don't blame the NYT for taking that information. There are legitimate reasons. It's a form of feedback for them about their customer base that enables them to improve their product. Companies are supposed to gather feedback and this feedback is quite painless to the customer. There are always those who use the opportunity for purposes you and I wouldn't approve of. Railing at cookies is, like the marriage thing, off target. If what you don't like is spam, then rail against spam. If what you don't like is the threat to the integrity of your system, then direct yourself to that. Cookies, themselves, are not the problem.
