Our army has gotten a lot smaller. It still has the ability to project massive force but it has less ability to deploy a large number of soldiers for a long period of time. Most of the cuts took place under Clinton. I think that those who say he gutted the military are making a somewhat unfair and innacurate statement, as the military remained a very powerful and flexible force but the cut backs in force size did have an effect. One we can cope with if we don't have another war happen while we are still heavily deployed in Iraq but we have little in the way of strategic reserve in the army at this time. If problems happen in Korea or elsewhere that require a large amount of US military force that force would have to be mostly air and sea based.

I understand what you are saying. The US military looks to be big enough to undertake multiple policing actions but not big enough for multiple wars. Part of the problem is that the war was fought on Rumsfeld theory that future wars should be fought with more technology and less troops. By taking that approach, he felt that casualties could be reduced which, of course, eliminates one of the major objections to war in a democracy.

And thanks in part to the sudden collapse of Saddam's military, Rumsfeld theory proved to work fairly well during the war but seems to be breaking down now in trying to keep the peace after the war. At times, I wonder if Saddam deliberately threw in his cards early, hoping that he could defeat us by demoralizing Amer. soldiers through a lot of hit and run action like what's happening now.

The fact that things are stretched so thinly makes me uncomfortable as I am sure it does other people. Hopefully, some of our allies will come up with more troops but right now, that isn't looking very likely.
