Yeah, I am getting cranky. But I don't agree with your example. Medical records are kept, at least in theory, for my benefit, and it is an abuse to use them for commercial purposes. Cookies are seldom kept for my benefit (my stockbroker and bank are an exception, but the NY Times is not using cookies to benefit me but to benefit themselves). It would be like your doctor doing secret tests he hadn't told you about and selling the results to drug companies so they could make more targeted dinner-time phone calls. Would that be okay with you?
