SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Field programmable gate array vendor Xilinx Inc. made a net income of $46.2 million on sales revenue of $313.3 million in the first quarter of its financial year, the company said Thursday (July 17, 2003).

Sales revenue was up 3 percent sequentially quarter-to-quarter and up 8 percent year-on-year and the profit compared with a $41 million in the same quarter last year.

For the second-quarter ending in September, Xilinx anticipates revenue flat to slightly up sequentially up from first-quarter revenue of $313.3 million.

The company scored strong sales growth in Asia-Pacific, up 61 percent, and Japan, up 29 percent, but year-on-year sales in North America declined 11 percent, although North America still takes 44 percent of Xilinx sales. The Asia-Pacific region was responsible for 18 percent of Xilinx sales in the first quarter, Japan took 16 percent of sales and Europe scored 22 percent.

"Xilinx's revenue growth in the Asia, Japan markets and in consumer applications is a testament to the increasing acceptance of programmable logic in regions that have traditionally been served by ASICs. It also speaks to the continued success of Xilinx's focused diversification efforts," said Wim Roelandts, president and chief executive officer, in a statement.
