MD - To many (most?) of the general populace out there, a lawsuit means nothing and carries no stigma. To them, it matters little to be sued and found liable for a $750,000 verdict. If there is nothing to collect, at worst you have to deal with garnishment of wages.

Fact is, plaintiff's lawyers typically take cases on a contingent fee basis. If there's not significant upside to a case (in other words, if successful, he or she will get 2 or 3x what he or she would expect on an hourly rate) the lawyer likely won't take the case. As M says, it's wise to carry high limits of liability insurance and its wise to carry as much UIM coverage as you can get to protect you from the bozos out there who are driving uninsured (of course, that doesn't help if you happen not to be in a car and are plowed down while buying lettuce at a farmer's market).
