UM coverage protects you if you're hit by an
uninsured or underinsured motorist as a pedestrian.
You simply have to qualify as an insured under your
auto policy.

The folks injured in the Santa Monica accident
can look to their own carriers for excess over
the amount, if any, available from the
driver's policy.

Another excellent reason to carry adequate UM limits.
