256M RAM is a bare minimum with current operating systems and software. Especially if you run multiple apps at the same time (e.g. Word + Excel + Powerpoint + Explorer + Publisher + Photoshop in any combination). I'm not even talking about serious programs. I've got stuff at work that by itself needs about 1Gb of RAM thank you very much. :-)

Anyway, yes, one can survive with 256M by running one or two programs at a time and rebooting once a day (otherwise memory consumption rises due to leaks). Otherwise, 512M is pretty much a must. With current memory prices, I don't even think it's worth a long discussion.

Jurgis - depends on the needs, is all.
