Okay, add $50 billion to the $455 billion. A $505 billion dollar deficit is equal to 4.8% of GDP. As I pointed out earlier, Clinton's 1991, 1992 and 1993 deficits were equal to 4.5%, 4.7% and 3.9%, respectively, of GDP. Hardly the end of the world.

My preference (which I am somewhat hesitant to state given that I am not a California resident) is for Davis to serve out the remainder of his term, which at this point must feel like a sentence to him. With approval ratings in the low 20's, "reviled" is probably an accurate term to describe how most voters feel about him.

If you think Bustamante can step into Davis' shoes, wrestle with the deficit, and come out smelling like a rose when he is up for re-electon in 2006, guess again.
