Thanks. Atheros was not involved with 802.16a development or if they were it was only at the last stage and marginal. I'm not surprised to see them get involved. It's interesting to see them apparently working with Aperto networks. Alvarion has used Atheros 802.11a radios as an OFDM core for proprietary WMAN equipment. Until the agreement with Intel was announced, something I had advocated that Alvarion pursue, I thought ALVR might hook up with Atheros.

Within three years, probably on a faster time tract than occurred after approval of the 802.11b standard, I expect several other IC manufacturers to get into the game. Intel jumped in 2nd after only Fujitsu and a few in-house ASIC efforts. The in-house ASICS might go the way of the dodo bird except for specific applications, such as satellite down link or niche terrestrial applications imo. Most of the equipment suppliers will gravitate towards merchant chips from Intel, Fujitsu, Atheros, etc. It remains to be seen what each company develops. 802.16a is a broader framework than any wireless standard before it and will spawn products for several different applications. Some of the IC vendors may compete in some but not all areas. WiMAX will help relieve much of the confusion in the marketplace but it will be complex.
