Vietnam was a war of liberation, only we fought against the liberation. The Vietnamese were trying to liberate themselves from the French. They asked our help and we refused, so they turned to the Russians instead. We went to war primarily to show that we would stand up to the Russians. You do realize that Ho Chi Minh tried to reach out to the United States for our help and cooperation, don't you? Millions of Vietnamese died to free their country. We could have saved ourselves a lot of trouble, not to mention millions of lives, by working with them instead of going to war against them. As for whether or not Vietnam is a "democracy", they are not. Most countries are not. We have no special right to invade countries when we do not like their political systems -- do you think we have such a right? Vietnamese will open their politics in their own way at their own speed. Being "communist" was just the price they paid for being free. Not that they are free, they can move towards a more liberal political system if they choose.
