Re: I have seen urban designers trying to deal with the issue- I don't know how popular their communities and plans are, though.

Here in Bend, OR, they are the most popular type of new neighborhood development. About eight years ago, a developer created a neighborhood with front porches and generous front yards facing the street, and all garages accessed off discrete alleys in the rear of the houses. The look is terrific, the folks who live in this retro-styled area are delighted, and the developer is a welcomed guest when he appears before the City Council to create new sub-divisions. And the properties are appreciating at a good clip, making this idea a winner all the way around.
