Yes but the middle 20% of voters decide prez elections.
Many of these people have been pro-Bush until recently. You have to be a little sensitive in how you convert them. If you go too negative you also make yourself negative in their eyes. It has to be a mixture of negative attacks on Bush and positive inspiration for new better policies. If all you do it attack you dont win. You hurt your opponent AND yourself. And God forbid if you jump to conclusions too fast and make an inaccurate charge. Then you lose your credibility.

Kerry does not need the 25% most liberal Democrats to get nominated but Dean does. If it's a Kerry-Dean race, Kerry is happy to concentrate on the other 75% who are more centrist or hybrid. Plus independents and moderate Republicans. Also remember the key to the White House is still Florida. And some of those Florida swing-voters are pretty conservative. Therefore why go too far left now when you dont have to? 95% of Democrats want anyone who can beat Bush. They learned their lesson in 2000 when some of them supported Nader and gave Bush the WH.
