Sleepy American Companies Wake Up Refreshed
Monday July 21, 11:06 am ET

By James J. Cramer,

Weird winners. That's what this market has, weird winners. Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT - News) was a weird one, an unlikely 10-point gainer, given that it hadn't hyped itself at all and hadn't been expected to do anything really amazing. Ingersoll-Rand (NYSE:IR - News) is one of those WWs, too. Who would have thought this company could leap so much without a takeover?

Today we produced two more weird winners: 3M (NYSE:MMM - News) and Fortune Brands (NYSE:FO - News). These companies are just basic American companies, as boring as faucets and sticky tape, but they are rocking. Fortune Brands had been telegraphed: The CEO came on "Kudlow & Cramer" a month and a half ago to tell us that things looked darned good. 3M, on the other hand, just quietly delivered good numbers, a la Caterpillar.
