You assert that it is (a) preferable and (b) feasible to have multilateral talks with Korea. I completely disagree. At most we might need help from China. I am not sure the White House is capable of conducting these talks with a third party to provide some "balance".

Multilateral talks are not more desirable in this case. The pace of any talks, direct or multilateral is a key issue. Multilateral talks will most definitely take longer to set up and conduct. If you want something accomplished more quickly, you want direct talks. You might ask, "what's the hurry"? The need for talks is extremely urgent. North Korea is building an arsenal. Delay in talks is not in our interests. Multilateral talks should FOLLOW defusing this crisis -- but to deny that we have an emerging crisis is irresponsible.

Multilateal talks are not feasible. The United States is off is rocker to ask to include Japan at this point. If there are any "true enemies" in this mess, it is Japan and North Korea. The prospects for bringing them together under the current circumstances is foolish. It provides North Korea with unlimited opportunities raise objections and stall talks while they build nukes.

Your assessment does not fit the context of issue or its urgency. We have a crisis on our hands and we are indeed drifting towards war. By debating the finer points of direct versus multilateral talks, waste precious time and move closer and closer to the point of no return.
