However, they pale in impact compared with the inexcusable killing of civilians, which is Arafat's strength. As I said before, if the only tool one has is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Both Arafat and Sharon have not shown a tool chest prepared for peace. (Much like Bush has no tools for nation building--just nation smashing.) However, given that Arafat is being marginalized, there is the best chance for peace in a long time. I think both sides may be sick of the conflict and its horrible costs. My own fantasy was for the Israelis to give Arafat power. Inevitably, he would be disposed of by Palestinians, and therefore, not martyred. However, the compelling economic advantages of peace would be the best long-term protection for each side. That's what is keeping the french and Germans from killing each other. fred
