RE:>>So, does this mean that you have joined me in my opposition to the "Road Map". Do you now believe what Arafat has stated repeatedly, that a state in the West Bank is a platform from which to launch the destruction of Israel? <<

I have never had any faith in either Arafat or Sharon. Arafat has a history of terrorism and corruption and is out of contact with the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people. Sharon has misled Begin and the Israeli cabinet by his clandestine invasion of Lebanon. The policies of the settlements are a barrier to any peace. However, they pale in impact compared with the inexcusable killing of civilians, which is Arafat's strength.

As I said before, if the only tool one has is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Both Arafat and Sharon have not shown a tool chest prepared for peace. (Much like Bush has no tools for nation building--just nation smashing.)

However, given that Arafat is being marginalized, there is the best chance for peace in a long time. I think both sides may be sick of the conflict and its horrible costs.

My own fantasy was for the Israelis to give Arafat power. Inevitably, he would be disposed of by Palestinians, and therefore, not martyred. However, the compelling economic advantages of peace would be the best long-term protection for each side. That's what is keeping the french and Germans from killing each other.
