1 - As I said we wouldn't have been there if it wasn't for any number of things. So "we wouldn't have been there without X" doesn't translate to "its all about X".

Oil is one of the things we wouldn't have been there without depending on exactly what you mean by oil in this context. I'll agree that we would not have been there if the whole area had no oil. But we would have been there if Iraq had no oil (but Kuwait and Saudi did) but it had some other way to buy weapons and build a dangerous regime.
