Touchstones are a good thing. They keep us focused and grounded and have a sentimental warmth about them. If what you're talking about is a set of moral touchstones, I can relate to that.

The thing that makes people itchy about absolute moral principles is that they're perpetuated intact, not subject to constructive evolution, and that they lend themselves to abuse from those who would claim to know the Truth of them or those who would use them as a hammer against decent people who have a slightly different POV.
