I agree that it doesn't need to be, but, if it were, there would be "zero" reason for the purchaser of a new system to buy INTC (assuming competitive pricing)...INTC is currently pushing the "no need for 64 bit" as that is their only opportunity to avoid massive market share erosion over the next short term (i.e. 2 years)...A win on both 32-bit and 64-bit by AMD would leave little "marketing manoeuverability potential" for INTC...

Reading between the lines of DM's statements, it sounds to me like the AMD64 will, no doubt, be a compelling offering to the new system purchaser, perhaps even a applying a "sledgehammer" to any would-be competitive offerings by the competition by outperforming in 32-bit mode!!!
