Tue July 22, 2003 01:26 PM ET
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean has surged to the top of the Democratic pack in a poll of Californians released on Tuesday that also showed a Democratic candidate would finish slightly ahead of President Bush in the state.
The Field poll found Bush's popularity falling in the largest state, with 40 percent of Californians saying they would support the eventual Democratic party nominee versus 39 percent for Bush.

The poll found that among the state's Democrats 16 percent favored former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean in the presidential primary, ahead of Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry at 15 percent and Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman at 14 percent.

A full third of Democratic voters said they were undecided about whom to back.

Dean had the support of just seven percent of those polled in April. Lieberman won the April poll at 22 percent although 29 percent of voters were undecided.

Support for the Democratic winner remained unchanged since April, although Bush's support dropped from 45 percent. California in a state that has backed the Democratic candidate in the last three presidential elections.

California has 54 electoral votes, making it by far the nation's largest election prize. Number two New York has 33.

"Dean's strongest appeal is among men, college graduates and those who classify themselves as liberal in politics," pollsters Mark DiCamillo and Mervin Field said in a statement. "Kerry's strongest constituencies are voters living in the nine-county San Francisco Bay area and Democrats age 50 or older."

"Lieberman appears to be doing best among Democrats identifying themselves as moderate or conservative in politics, and among southern California voters living outside Los Angeles County."
