US bombed the Chinese embassy by mistake. Any other construction is absurd.

Your Chinese friends got to give you a hard time about it. The US paid China $30 million to get over the hurt feelings.

And there was an investigation. The Chinese remained a little miffed because the US wouldn't publically hang a multitude of CIA types from the yard arm. Very unreasonable for them to have expected otherwise.

This Washington Post page has reasonable coverage. Arkin notes, as I did at the time, the Chinese were grandstanding:
