Joe was a hero, just ask the Kennedy's (He was a friend of John's and godfather to Robert's first, Kathleen). He only did the heavy lifting. Eventually the communists in government were exposed and were dealt with.

Ann has 46 pages of footnotes to back up her side of the story. Have you read the book in question or Buckley's book? Maybe her acerbic wit against liberals in general is offensive but it doesn't negate any truth and is just her way of saying she ain't backing down from a little name-calling and will give as good as she gets.

Columnist Jack Anderson admitted in 1953, "We had used up almost our entire bag of tricks against McCarthy, without marked effect".

McCarthy was the youngest circuit court judge in Wisconsin (he left the bench to join the Marines in WWII!!), the youngest Senator and the first WWII veteran in the Senate. He was pretty damn popular and originally considered a "moderate" when he first arrived in Washington. He vigorously supported civil rights. His only beef was with communists and eventually those that shielded them. He had nothing to do with the Hollywood end of things. That was the HUAC.
