Joe's "beef" was with anyone who he felt was a political enemy. He smeared good men with the hint of communist spy, to the ruin of many (yes, I've listed some here a couple of months ago, and no one here denied that they had been hurt by McCarthy's unfounded accusations). To say that McCarthy was right now because there were some communist spies in government is like saying that Hitler was right because, statistically, some Jews must have been guilty of something. It is an incredibly inept argument.
