I do admit that rationalization of that kind is, probably, not above any country and, in fact, maybe considered justifiable. I fail to see how attacking USS Liberty would save civilian lives in Israel.

In the case of the 1967 war, there was no advanced certainty of the outcome. What is the outcome if Israel loses the war? Or the perception that Israel has if they lose? One can't put accurate probabilities on outcomes, but suppose Israel has the perception that their probability of winning the war alone, is 0.85. Pretty good odds; 0.15 probability of losing. What's the size of the bet: survival. It were my perspective, with that bet, 0.15 doesn't look all that nifty.

Israelis are not idiots to think that they can attack Liberty with mirages and torpedo boats and sink it before it would send a distress call.

We don't plan to fail. We plan to succeed. One or two better placed napalms and a better hit from the torpedo boat and it would have been all over. The crew wasn't transmitting a distress with the configuraton that existed prior to the attack. All antennas were taken out. The crew had to get on deck, under fire and string an antenna wire.
