And it probably only "appalls" Americans. Germans would no doubt be appalled by American misconceptions regarding Germans. The emotional reaction to misperceptions of various truths are going to vary country to country. Nadine finds it appalling that our government might be blamed for something it did not do, but not appalling some other government could be (because they "would have done it if they could")- which, of course, we don't know, but is stated as if it were a fact- cute, huh? No doubt many people in other countries feel the US "would do all sorts of things if they could" and even more probably already believe we ARE doing all sorts of things (like the fellows interviewed in Islam online who said our soldiers were looting Iraqi homes).

What's going to be "fine" is going to be totally subjective, as is what is appalling. That's a good lesson.
