there can be subheadings beneath "its all about the oil".

If those subheadings aren't just different aspects of it being about oil, but are instead something besides oil, then it isn't all about oil but only partially about oil.

So then, its not about protecting the US.......its about protecting foreign nationals?

There are a number of Americans who would be killed, quite a bit more then where killed in Iraq.

Its about protecting the US, our interests, and our allies.

Of course, its unstated. Do you tell your neighbor you covet his mercedes or his ferrari? If you do, don't be surprised if the police pay you a vist if and when it gets stolen.

1 - Has the Iraqi oil been stolen?

2 - The example you give is at least a simple argument with few unstated premises, basically only one (coveting an item increases the chance that you will take it). That one unstated premises is both obvious and uncontroversial in the case of the Mercedes or the Ferrari. In the case of Iraqi oil there would need to be further premises which are not so obvious. At a certain point it is reasonable to say the argument has not even been made rather then trying to guess at all the premises that the other side will not even state, and thus effectively make their argument for them.
