Silicon valley. My sister recently sold her house in a poorer neighborhood, about 1300 or so sq ft, for more than $400K. Housing can be had cheaper than $500K, but the neighborhood would probably be run down and/or a very small house.

For teachers, it is difficult. Some band together and buy a house; many rent; others are married and their spouses have higher paying jobs. But, with the recent rise in unemployment, many of these dual income families have had one person laid off.

A recent SV survey said that 25% of the people surveyed had been laid off for more than 6 months in the past few years, and that 35+% lived in a household where someone had been laid off for 6+ months. The economy is in real tough shape out here.
