Pictures of the corpses were not sent to all the media, for identification. That had already been done. Rather, they were displayed as a propaganda tool. News reports quote Americans, quite clearly, that the corpses are being displayed, to worsen morale among the enemy who is attacking our soldiers.

The Romans used to cut off the heads of dead enemy leaders, and mount them on spikes along the roads, for the same reason. Modern technology, 2000 years of "progress", allows us to achieve the same effect all over the world.
