"But most have few resources to use to prove their innocence. There would have to be matching funds from the state to level that playing field."

Our system does not expect you to prove your innocence. This is a common misconception. You are only expected to show that the state has failed to come up with sufficient evidence to prove your guilt. You can be declared guilty if the state has sufficient evidence. If not, you can be declared not guilty. For practical purposes not guilty is equal to innocent but in reality it does not prove you are innocent; only that the state failed to prove its case. Lots of heinous crimes are committed and for which sufficient evidence can not be obtained to prove guilt.

I agree that the playing field is not fair for all players. The wealthy can afford a legal defense that can do a lot more to mess up the state's case. I would like to have much higher standards of proof that are not so dependant on the cleaverness of lawyers.
