Ted,

I imagine Chaney and Bush were trying to figure a way to secure Iraqi fields for future oil needs.

The talk show conservatives still want to use lofty goals to justify the Iraq war; freeing the Iraqi people from a tyrant (something we don't seen to care about in the rest of the world), or defending the US from massive quantities of WMD's (complete BS).

The truth is that we want to get those Iraqi fields producing before we have a serious shortage, a few years down the road. Not noble, but pragmatic. What are the options, $70 a barrel oil, much of American wealth going to OPEC countries?

Politically, that's pretty hard to explain to the parents of the casualties. You don't get reelected trading lives for oil reserves.
