It was his winking support of the Hanoi communists, combined with the passionate and very LOUD treason of his supporters-always a small minority of the republic, even at the height of the "peace" movement-that drove mainstream voters away from McGovern. That same shrillness is being duplicated by a similar anti-American crowd today. These hysterical America-haters have the clout to put "The Red Dean" at the top of the ticket in 2004. They will then engage in a nation-wide Wellstone Funeral for the duration of the campaign-and watch as the majority of the people turn out to reject them and their ideas in November. The destruction of the Democratic party is a negative outcome for the republic. We need a reformed Democratic party, not a destroyed one. The SPEED with which the anti-American left is roaring toward the "edge"-as even Joe Leiberman is now pointing out-is the slim hope for that party's survival and liberation...
