Eric:

I'm in Almafi now, and do have spotty GPRS coverage. In Naples a few hours ago, I could see the signal, but not use it (like Venice again!) I was able to access the GPRS network as soon as left Venice. I had spotty coverage in Florence as well. By spotty, I mean 50/50. Most of the time my phone sees a GPRS signal, 1/2 the time I am allowed to use it.

The T-Mobile guys were just plain wrong in my opinion. They do have roaming agreements with TIM in Italy for their GPRS, but I believe that TIM does not allow access all the time, or everywhere. For example, we never got access in the 5 days we were in Venice. There were times I had access at my hotel outside of Florence, but times it did not let me through from the same location.

All in all, GPRS is OK here in Italy. Phone coverage remains good, but quality is quite an issue - and if that is a radio issue, it goes for both of the brand new devices we have here with us.
