Produce at bargain prices as China enjoys bumper harvest

By China Bureau Chief Maria Siow

Summer time in Beijing is characterised by baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables at stalls and supermarkets.

And this year, the harvest has been unusually bountiful, resulting in a glut that is caused a steep drop in the prices of agricultural produce.

Fresh lychees at bargain prices -- for less than one US dollar, you can take home one kilogramme of the juicy fruit.

And these Elizabeth melons cost only 15 cents per kilo.

Also fetching rock bottom prices are produce such as maize, cabbage, brinjal and capsicum.

As for luscious red tomatoes -- just pay 10 US cents, and you'll get two kilogrammes worth.
