Apple shares leap in early trading

NEW YORK, Aug 6 (Reuter) - Shares in Apple Computer Corp surged
nearly 30 percent in early trading on Wednesday after news
Microsoft Corp (MSFT) would invest $150 million in the struggling
computer maker.

Apple also announced a broad series of alliances with Microsoft,
as well as a nearly complete revamping of its board, replacing
all but two of its directors.

Apple opened up 5-1/2 points or 28 percent at 25-1/4 after an
opening delay on Nasdaq of an hour. Within minutes of its 1030
EDT/1430 GMT opening, Apple was the second most active Nasdaq
issue, on volume of more than 6.0 million shares.

By mid-morning, more than seven million shares had changed hands.
