Gottfried, I hope you won't find it intrusive of me to ask you what your area of expertise was in the disk drive process.

And can you comment on this note from someone I was corresponding with regarding read-rite ?

I'm wondering why readrite had low yields on the 40GB head. Is the risk more in the wafer fab or in the slider assembly ?

The following was written by xmlerator on Yahoo wdc board.

"I did a tour of the wafer fab facility when it was undergoing an earlier transition but I couldn't tell you what the current capacity is since that depends on many things. A wafer fab essentially fabricates circuits through a series of steps starting with lithography which prints the circuit pattern on the wafer and then etch and deposition, etc. etc. until you have a series of die on the wafer that become the recording heads. Manufacturing capacity depends both on the number of wafers your physical facility can process and on the yield per wafer (ie. number of good heads per wafer). They also lose die/heads in the assembly process in Thailand that impacts total yield so both ends must be working well to achieve low costs. Right now I would guess that they can process enough wafers to more than satisfy WDC but the yields are probably low...."
